BE SAFE

Drawing from their own experiences with rape culture, as well as their queer, trans femme, and cis woman friends' stories of street harassment, “Be Safe” externalizes the uneasy terror of belonging to a marginalized gender and navigating the world of victim-blaming. This installation rhetorically raises the question as to whether victims should be responsible for violence prevention or whether perpetrators should learn not to be violent.

Julz created a "romantic," satirical retail installation for the month of February. They made over 120 intentionally warped resin pepper sprays for three wearable purse sculptures visible to over 10,000 pedestrians and shoppers daily on Valencia Street in San Francisco.
